6. Consent and the Surgical Pathway

The Consent Process

In accordance with RCS Professional Standards and GMC guidance:

  • Mr Whitehead personally conducts all consultations and obtains consent. This responsibility is not delegated to another practitioner.
  • Consent is obtained in a two-stage process with a minimum 14-day cooling-off period between the initial consultation and surgery. This allows you time to reflect on your decision.
  • Should the cooling-off period not be possible in exceptional circumstances, the reasons will be documented in your medical record.
  • Consent is documented in writing.

Your Right to Change Your Mind

You may change your mind at any point, up to and including the moment before surgery begins. We will never pressure you to proceed. If you decide not to go ahead, your deposit terms (Section 7) will apply, but your decision will be fully respected.

Right to Decline Treatment

Mr Whitehead reserves the right to decline to perform surgery if:

  • The procedure is unlikely to achieve your desired outcome
  • There are medical contraindications
  • There are concerns about psychological vulnerability or body image disturbance — in which case, surgery may be deferred pending psychological assessment, in line with RCS guidance
  • The patient's request is not voluntary

In all cases, we will explain our reasoning, discuss alternatives (including non-surgical options and the option of no treatment), and respect your right to seek a second opinion.

GP Involvement

We consider it good practice to inform your GP about your treatment. We will seek your permission before doing so. If you prefer your GP is not informed, we will record this in your notes and consider whether this affects the balance of risk and benefit, as required by GMC guidance (paragraph 27).

Children and Young People

For patients under 18:

  • A parent or guardian must provide consent
  • We will assess whether the young person has the maturity and capacity to participate in the decision
  • If we judge that the child does not want the procedure, we will not perform it, regardless of parental consent
  • Treatment is only provided where it is in the young person's best interests

7. Fees, Deposits, and Payments
