What Harley Street Actually Means

Harley Street has carried a medical reputation since the nineteenth century, when consultants clustered around the Marylebone squares to be near their patients and the new railway termini. That history is real. What it is not is a regulator. There is no Harley Street licensing body, no Harley Street examination, and no register you must join to practise there. It is a street. Rooms on it are rented by the session, and the surgeon in the room next door may have trained very differently from the one you are seeing.

This matters for rhinoplasty more than for most operations. Nose surgery is performed in the UK by ENT surgeons, by plastic surgeons, and by practitioners with neither of those specialist qualifications, and the law does not reserve the word “surgeon” to any of them. The address on the letterhead will not tell you which one you have found. Three free checks will.

Three checks worth doing on any nose surgeon

  1. 1. Find them on the GMC register. Every doctor practising in the UK has a seven-digit GMC number, and the register is public and free to search. Mine is 4372358. If a number is not published anywhere, ask for it.
  2. 2. Check the Specialist Register, not just the register. Being on the GMC register makes someone a doctor. Being on the Specialist Register in a surgical speciality is the higher bar. I am on it in Otolaryngology, which is ENT, and hold the FRCS(ORL-HNS) qualification.
  3. 3. Look up the building, not only the person. Consulting rooms and hospitals are inspected and rated by the Care Quality Commission, and those reports are public. Both buildings I work in are rated Good, and the links are below.

None of that is special pleading for my own practice. It is the same set of checks I would want a member of my family to make, and it will rule out the small number of people trading on a W1 postcode without the training to back it. Where I Consult and Where I Operate

These are two different buildings, roughly seven minutes’ walk apart. Consultations, imaging and follow-up happen on Harley Street. The operation itself happens in a licensed theatre at Weymouth Street Hospital, because rhinoplasty under general anaesthetic needs full anaesthetic support and overnight cover that an outpatient consulting room cannot provide.

Both addresses sit inside the Congestion Charge zone and on-street parking in Marylebone is metered and scarce, so public transport is usually the easier choice.

What Happens at a Harley Street Consultation

The appointment runs for a full hour and it is a clinical assessment, not a sales meeting. I examine the outside and the inside of your nose, including the septum and the airway, because in a great many people the cosmetic concern and the breathing problem turn out to be the same deformity seen from two directions.
